Book Review: Sammy Spider's First Taste of Hanukkah by Sylvia A. Rouss and Genene Levy Turndorf, Illustrated by Katherine Janus Kahn

*****This review is meant for parents, teachers, and other people that work with children to read.*****

In Sammy Spider's First Taste of Hanukkah, Sammy the Spider hangs around to help with recipes and arts and craft activities for Hanukkah season. With each recipe and activity he lists items (bowls, cooking utensils, etc.) that are needed to make the recipes and supplies needed for the arts and craft activities. The ingredients and directions are then listed. Some of the directions in the recipes children should be able to follow (depending on the age level of children participating), although there are parts of the recipes that definitely need to be completed by adults, such as when something needs to be cooked on the stove or put in the oven. The pictures of what will be made with the recipes and arts and craft activities are illustrations, which I believe will help children to imagine what it is they are about to create from the recipes and arts and craft directions.

In my opinion, this was a great book to add to the Sammy Spider series because it adds the joy of cooking food and creating arts and craft activities during the Hanukkah season! I liked that each recipe included a symbol as to whether it is dairy, meat, or parev, which helps people to know which set of cooking utensils and bowls to use if they keep separate sets. I also liked that the steps to create the recipes and arts and craft activities were detailed enough so that children could understand them.

I think that this is another great book in the series to help take the fear of spiders from children while making fun recipes and creating arts and craft activities!
