Book Blog Tour and Contest Information: Smitten Book Club by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter

Smitten Book Club is written by Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Diann Hunt, and Denise Hunter. It is broken up into four separate parts, which can also be looked at as four separate books since each part has a new title and restarts at chapter one. The story focuses on a book called The Gentlewoman's Guide to Love and Courtship which is passed around to different women in a book club. The parts/chapters are written about one book club member each.  At the beginning of each chapter there is a short saying about what the women are reading in the book, such in chapter five of the “A New Chapter” section by Diann Hunt: “Differences of opinion can separate or strengthen. The wise woman can grow through adversity”. The women who follow the advice in the book are supposed to be able to find the right man for each of them, or strengthen their relationships with their current suitors.

I liked the book club theme in this book, which is the reason I decided to read and review it.  I also didn’t know how it would read with four different authors and I was happy to be able to find it broken down into sections that each author wrote because I often wonder what part each author wrote when I read a book with more than one author.

I paid the most attention to the sayings at the beginning of the chapters because they seemed to relay advice to the book’s characters as well as I believe to the book’s reading audience and provided a tone for the chapters. I liked that the women did not seem in a hurry to finish the book but wanted to take in its lessons as much as possible.

I often feel like it’s very rare for a group of people who know each other to enjoy the same book, unless it’s about a topic that many people are interested in, such as with this case of women wanting to become better at relationships with their suitors. Not only did the book they were reading help people in their relationships with their suitors, or potential suitors, it helped them come closer into relationship with each other by discussing something that was important to them.

It was an inspiration to me to read about a group of women who came together to discuss the book The Gentlewoman's Guide to Love and Courtship and that they helped each other in the process. It made me wonder what the next potential book the women might be discussing will be.

Disclosure of material connection: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Litfuse Publicity Group for this review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.

More about the book:

The century-old Gentlewoman's Guide to Love and Courtship is no ordinary book club choice. But for the little book club in Smitten, Vermont, it might be their best pick yet!

The thick, leathery tome Heather pulled out of the dusty cardboard box was definitely coming home with her. Not only was The Gentlewoman's Guide to Love and Courtship an appealing curiosity by virtue of its title; it was also written by Smitten, Vermont native Pearl Chambers, a local gentlewoman from three generations back.

Little did Heather know the repercussions this little curiosity would have on her and her friends' romantic exploits.

When Heather and her fellow book club members begin passing the book around, their respective interpretations are unleashed on their respective love lives . . . for better or for worse. Is it a mystery? An idealist fantasy? An intimation of Jane Austen? As romantic love finds its way to each woman, the Guide proves itself both surprisingly prescient and hilariously irrelevant.

What's more, a handwritten inscription indicates that the arcane book might hold the only extant clues leading to buried gold---exactly what one of the members needs to keep her house. How could they not go treasure hunting?

In this remarkable collaborative novel, besties Colleen Coble, Kristin Billerbeck, Denise Hunter, and Diann Hunt tackle the tale of the Gentlewoman's Guide by writing for one book club member apiece. Smitten Book Club is a hopeful, hilarious story of friendship and healing, written by friends for friends.
