Book Blog Tour and Contest Information: When Jesus Wept by Bodie and Brock Thoene

When Jesus Wept brings readers into the story of the relationship of Jesus and Lazarus. It sheds a bright light on Scriptures relating to that time and also opens readers’ minds to help them think through the unknowns with the fictionalized story elements used throughout the story. There are Jewish references, such as about a Greek Jew named Porthos who had a Jewish father and a Greek mother, to help the readers better clarify the Jewish Biblical foundations. Some of the unnamed Biblical characters are given fictionalized names in this story, to help readers understand that they were real people with names.

I loved that there were references to Scripture throughout the book so that I could go back to the index and look up the Scriptures at times. This showed me what parts came from Scripture and helped me to understand what other parts may have been fictionalized. This approach gave me thoughts such as “this could have happened”.  I loved coming across the Biblical story from John 2:12, about Jesus turning water into wine at the wedding. I have read the story in the Bible before but this time it really opened my mind as to why the best wine should be drunk first; Jesus clearly demonstrates through Scripture that his followers are not supposed to get drunk, and the people needed watered down wine later on so they wouldn’t get drunk.

I loved reading this book and hope to be able to read other books in the Jerusalem Chronicles series. I believe this book drew me closer to Jesus as I was reading it. I often read it on Sabbath and during no work Biblical feast days because I thought it would help my relationship with him. I recommend it to people that are familiar with the story about Jesus and Lazarus and for people who have not already learned about it.

More About When Jesus Wept

Book 1 in the Thoene's new Jerusalem Chronicles.
Lazarus occupies a surprising position in the Gospel accounts. Widely known as the man Jesus raised from the dead, his story is actually much broader and richer than that. Living as he did at Bethany, near Jerusalem, Lazarus was uniquely placed to witness the swirl of events around Jesus. When Jesus Wept, the first novel in The Jerusalem Chronicles series by bestselling authors Bodie and Brock Thoene, unfolds the turbulent times in Judea during Jesus' ministry, centering on the friendship between Jesus and Lazarus. With rich insights from vineyard owners and vine dressers, the Thoenes explore the metaphor of Jesus as the True Vine, harvesting the ancient secrets found in the Old Testament. Weaving the life of Lazarus, who owned a vineyard, into the crucifixion and resurrection of Christ will help you understand it is the hand of Love Divine that holds the knife, that cuts and breaks with such tender and loving touch, and that we who have born some fruit, after the pruning, can bear much more.
