Book Review: When the Soul Mends by Cindy Woodsmall

When the Soul Mends: Book 3 in the Sisters of the Quilt Series:

Hannah Lapp had been gone from the Amish community for a couple of years when she learns that her family needs help and decides to return for a visit. Her family and the people in their community don’t give her the warmest welcome when she returns because she has come from the Englisher world. Hannah postpones returning to her boyfriend and his niece and nephew that he took in; she delayed her return because she wanted to help her sister with some mental health problems. Hannah tries to avoid Paul when she is in town because there were some problems in their relationship that were too hard to try to fix in the middle of the family crises; Hannah soon discovers that Paul is not so easy to avoid though.

What I liked the most about this book is how it shows that we shouldn’t give up who God made us to be on the inside to please someone; if we are not allowed to be ourselves then we are just being a copy of who someone else wants us to be. For Hannah she felt like she was unable to truly become a part of the Amish or the Englisher world. The family relationships that are the closest for most people were very strained for Hannah and I liked her outlook on life when she ran into hardships with those relationships. It was hard for me to determine at first if Paul and Hannah’s unresolved differences were going to cause more strain during the time they saw each other or if the anger was going to be healed. What really helped me to follow along with the characters in this book were the descriptions of the main characters in this book series that were listed before the story started.

This is a book that Amish novel lovers will most likely not want to miss!
